Cherries are one of today’s “super fruits”, and do you know that such super fruits are of thousands in types? There are almost 54 Prunus species that bear the common name cherry. The most common of these comes from the Prunus avium (commonly known as the sweet cherry) and Prunus cerasus (as the sour cherry) – both commonly used in cooking.

A wide range of the wild cherry comes through most of Europe, western Asia, and parts of the northern Africa. Most cherries usually have a very short growing season and grow in most temperate latitudes. In North America, cherries begin to grow in the month of June (appears to be the first three fruits to ripen) and can be found in the valleys of Okanagan.

The most popular among the sweet cherries are the Bing, Lambert, King, Brooks, Rainier and Tulare. On the other hand, the most common in the group of sour cherries are the Montgomery, Nanking and Evans.

Hydroponics is an innovative way of producing and growing plants, fruits and vegetables of your choice using nutrient-enriched balanced water, without the use of any soil. Hydroponic gardening is simple and very flexible, you can grow healthy plants without a yard and has proved soil itself is not an essential element in growing plants.

Plants that are grown using the hydroponics process are said to be more healthier than growing them the traditional way. Hydroponic planting produces more nourishing, purer fruits and flowers compared to other methods, at the same time makes the plants free from any bacteria. This kind of system is absolutely earth-friendly for it does not harm our environment and does not need the use of any fertilized soil.

To sustain the plants in a hydroponic technique, a medium like fiber, sand or stone can be used to anchor its roots. Such mediums are made to be very air and water absorbent which we all know are very essential in producing a healthy plant or flower.

Not everyone likes eating fresh fruit. Some find it messy to have juice and pulp dripping on their hands and on their clothes, others find it taxing to peel off the skin of the fruit while others prefer sliced fruit. Other people also prefer frozen dried fruit snacks.

Freeze drying fruits is a method used by fruit product manufacturers to preserve the nutrients and taste of fresh fruit. Also known as cryodesiccation, the process involves a combination of freezing and sublimation. The fruit is frozen and the frozen juice or liquid portion in the fruit turns to gas by applying low pressure and heat in a controlled environment.

The history of freeze drying goes back to World War II. Its purpose was to make medicines in vials be placed in a stable environment that would not alter its state and thus avoid spoilage before it arrived to its destination without the need for refrigeration during the journey.

When you want a healthy fruit snack in an instant you can get a pack of dried fruit in the supermarket or buy frozen dried fruits online.

This is so because the apple is not only juicy and delicious, it has no fat, cholesterol or sodium but only has a small amount of potassium with every bite. It is also one of those fruits that you can transform into another delicious treat like jams, sauces, pies and cider.

In America, there are numerous pick your own fruit farms where you can find different varieties of apples. Depending on the location of the apple picking orchards, varieties like Arkansas Black, Bailey Sweet, Connell Red, Sweet Sixteen, Egremont Russet, Golden Delicious, London Apple, Maiden’s Blush, Northfield Beauty, Prairie Spy, Red Baron, Summer Rambo, Twenty Ounce and Zabergu Reinette.

Fruit picking farms also offer other activities. Yes, it’s not all just harvesting of apples. Some farms allow camping and hiking. Others give tours, rides on horses, mazes and free seminars on how to make cider or apple sauce.

Currently it uses the technique known as hydroponics, a soilless farming method to directly cater to the sustenance and needs of the population leaving in the nearby urban areas.

By closely monitoring the critical level of agricultural supply and demand, Cityscape Farms could verily answer the needs of city dwellers through rooftop farming with a yield of ample products packed with all the freshness and nutrients in less time, less use of water and less use of land or no soil at all. Cityscape Farms is also venturing to combine fish cultivation known as Aquaponics, with hydroponics complimenting each other’s effective production through recycling fertilizer employment from fish feeds to plant nutrients.

Cityscape Farms encourages partnership with the local population residing in cities to lease their rooftops to the company employing the greenhouse system to create their own fruit farms.

Sharing fruits is also their mission. You may ask, how does this work? It’s actually quite simple.

First, fruit growers register their fruit bearing tree. Depending on the tree, once it is ready for fruit picking, it will show up on the profile of registered users. The second step involves connecting fruit pickers to the fruit growers by showing them the location of the tree. From then on, the fruit pickers and fruit growers discuss on meet ups or pick ups of the fruit.

Neighborhood Fruit also lets you find trees on public land. However, they can’t guarantee that the tree has fruit. With registered trees, you can pick your own fruit.

This community is open for all fruit growers who are willing to share excess fruit from trees growing on their backyards. Of course, it is not limited to fruit alone. Excess nuts, herbs and vegetables are also welcome.

The fruit farm offers fruits and vegetables. Apple butter, apple sauce, pear butter, apple juice and canned peaches are available all year. Three Springs Fruit Farm offers strawberries, apricots, cherries and walnuts around the middle of the year from May to July. As for raspberries, blueberries, black raspberries, peaches, nectarines and pears, they are available on the latter half of the year.

Growing fruit on 350 acres of land is not easy.
